Welcome, I’m delighted you are here.
I want to share something with you that changed my life.
After many years of trying to heal from the effects of a painful childhood, I realized that all the strategies that I had tried involved listening to other people’s ideas of what would make me feel better. Except they didn’t.
Therapy, graduate school, and advanced training helped me understand more about myself. Still, the anxiety, shame, and sadness remained, and the joy and aliveness that I could feel inside remained inaccessible.
I was tired, frustrated, and angry when I realized I had never listened to and believed in what my body might know.
As I contemplated this, I had a stunning realization.
If humans have been evolving for millions of years, how could we not be designed for healing? The survival of our species is closely linked to our social nature and our relationship with others. It was suddenly totally apparent to me that we had to have the natural capability to heal from wounding that was relational or social.
I knew I had to be on to something, some inner capacity I had yet to discover. I took my frustration and a spark of belief in myself and said, “Fuck it!” and began a radical inward journey to see what I would find. So, I slowed down, turned inward, and tuned into myself. I have not stopped healing or learning since.
Now, I listen to and learn from others about their healing journeys. There is some truly fantastic work being done out there! But now I can trust my inner wisdom, which continues to be my compass in knowing what direction is right for me.
Understanding became more apparent.
Along the way, I learned that many of my perceived weaknesses were superpowers! My feelings and sensitivity allowed me to see and understand things that others missed.
My shame, anxiety, and crippling self-doubt had helped me stay helpfully small and invisible as a child, protecting me from the harm that would come to be if I stepped out of line. As an adult, I learned how to show up for these parts of me that had never received the safety, love, compassion, and comfort they had always deserved.
Eventually, I learned to feel safe enough to come out of my protective shell and let that hidden part of myself shine. Allowing my feelings and experiences to be felt led to profound healing. Even the protective self-doubt that had kept me small and safe from others could not deny that I had stumbled upon learning how to heal.
As I kept exploring, feeling, struggling, and healing, I realized I could trust this process rooted in the knowledge that we are designed for healing.
Listen to and express those innermost feelings.
Feelings can be so frightening and overwhelming that we learn to hide from them. In our work, we will sit with these feelings together to hear their sadness, fear, anger, and shame and hold them with the compassion, empathy, and gratitude they deserve.
In time, you will notice more self-compassion, emotional flexibility, and resilience, gaining a sense of internal knowing. You will see a growing sense of calm, peace, and confidence as the overwhelm and emotional instability subside. This sense of possibility will continue to grow and accompany you on your healing journey. This is what it feels like when your nervous system begins to heal.
You don’t have to know anything about therapy or how it works. You don’t need to be all that great at describing your feelings or experiences. The only requirement is to show up and listen to what internally needs your attention. I’ll be there with you.
It’s time!
You deserve to be happy! Learn to listen to your inner voice, calm your nervous system, get out of your head, and let your innate healing flow.
Call me to book a discovery call today. We will have a 15- to 30-minute online consultation during which I can answer your questions and assess whether we are a good fit.
About Karen Mellozzo, MSW, LCSW
Style has never been my thing.
I hate wearing grown-up clothes and prefer to be in sweats, and I want you to feel comfortable showing up to therapy in your comfy clothes.
Roaming around in nature, looking at bugs, plants, and animals, is something I love to do. I am endlessly learning and believe that nature has more to teach us about how to live life than people do.
I love doing this work.
It changed my life and inspired me to serve others who were looking to find a way through their pain. I maintain that only with generous appreciation for the awe-inspiring vastness of what we do not and cannot know can we indeed be open to seeing what was not apparent before. This helped me to remain open and curious in my healing journey.
For me, healing was, in part, a rebellion. A bold exploration of trusting my voice over others. I honor however you identify and support your wholly stepping into the truth of who you are.
